George W. Shaffer reminiscence, 1893.

This collection consists of an 1893 reminiscence by George W. Shaffer, former treasurer of the Central Railroad Company of Georgia, of an excavation at the foot of Spring Hill Redoubt (an earthen fortification used by the British in Savannah during the 18th century) for the building of a new depot. During the excavation, the workers unearthed 30 skeletons in Hessian uniform and a solid gold buckle. In a letter written by Shaffer to Henry R. Jackson, president of the Georgia Historical Society, he explains that he is one of two surviving employees of the Central Railroad Company during that time and therefore wanted the memory to be preserved. The belt buckle was presented to the Georgia Historical Society (the buckle is missing as of 2007). A typed copy of the letter is included in this collection; the original remains in the Georgia Historical Society's administrative files. There is also a typed copy of the reminiscence in this collection.
